HOWDY HEIDI+WE DO WHATEVER IT TAKES
One of my favourite blogs can be found at Howdi Heidi (highlight those custom Sigg bottles!) which is partially sponsored by Switzerland Tourism.
Let's face it. Ads about Swiss Tourism tended to be well, let's be honest, bland and dull. But this ad campaign of "we do whatever it takes to make your holiday perfect" is brilliant, self-parodying (is that a word?) and so out of the box we've got nothing but kudos to whoever conceived it (who is the creative director on this ad? stand up and be counted!). They've taken Switzerland's conservative mountain geekiness and flipped it to something wonderful - the Swiss mountain men listening to ZZ Top-type rock music and then switching to traditional Swiss music as soon as some Japanese appear on the horizon is genius! Despite being such a generally conservative place that Swiss Tourism could a) produce such a tongue-in-cheek self-deprecating self-parody and (the hard part) b) getting somebody to sign off on it as a viable pitch to the world to come to Switzerland can do nothing but inspire hope that there are some brave people who know how to touch the heart strings and never take themselves too serious! Bravo and watch it below.

MAPS+EDGE+SERPENTINE GALLERY+REMAPPING AFRICA
The inspiring Edge is collaborating this weekend with the The Serpentine Map Marathon for a show at the Royal Geographical Society in London. It's all about maps and how they change the way we look at the world.
I've seen this before but it's great to feel again the first impact it had on me. It's a mapping of countries onto the African continent called The True Size of Africa by Kai Krause - which gives most people a totally new perspective on the immense size of Africa: larger than the USA, China, India, Japan and Europe combined. More on the topic of maps and Africa later but this is definitely worth passing on right away - click here to see a larger version of the map.
P.S. If you are into strange maps then point your RSS client at Frank Jacob's Strange Maps.

ISO50 and the Dark Side of the Lens
Scott Hansen is a San Francisco-based graphic designer (ISO50) and musician (Tycho) with a nice retro style that reminds me of the visual imagery I was surrounded with during my childhood in California. He has a clear influence from Bauhaus-style graphics and the matte dull colour posters from the 1960's and 70's. There's an interview with him on Grain Edit.
Normally I just enjoy looking at his design work but recently one of the ISO50 regular contributors made a post about a video called The Dark Side of the Lens which is "filled with absolutely breathtaking shots". They're right. Watch it. Kudos to Mickey Smith and Allan Wilson for this beautiful piece of work.
